Considered as one of the best gliding sites in the country. with stunning views over the Shropshire Hills and Wales, the five mile long ridge facing the prevailing westerly winds is ideal for extended flight times when thermals do not oblige.

Our Experience Flights are conducted by experienced pilots who are qualified by the British Gliding Association to undertake paid flights and carry passengers.  Many of them have been flying for a living before they retired, come from the military, or have more than thirty years experience of flying gliders.

Gliding is very weather dependent so we may have to cancel your flight or rearrange it for another day at short notice.  If this happens we apologise in advance but are very much at the mercy of the weather.  We hope you understand.

Flight Experiences

Whether you are trying gliding  for the first time, or looking for a different new experience to add to your bucket list, our Experience Flights are ideal.

In order to make the best of your day we organise your visit as follows:

  • You may book a slot that suits you by telephoning the office on 01588 650 206
  • We try to meet your requirements for a day and time but our waiting list can be quite long, as the flights are in high demand
  • You may experience some slight delays if earlier flights have been delayed.  We do our best but please be patient
  • Should you find yourself unable to attend just call the office as soon as possible and rearrange
  • We suggest you try to arrive 15 minutes before your allotted time
  • We provide a full safety briefing before you fly.  It is a requirement that you have viewed it.
  • You may view a copy of our safety video by clicking the video link at the bottom of this page
  • If in any doubt please contact the office for advice.

Our Experience Flights include three months’ membership of the Club, so you can come back and fly at membership rates during the three months after your experienece flight.  If you decide to join as a Full Member

What should I wear?

The Long Mynd has an unpredictable climate all of its own so best to be prepared for almost anything, especially at the beginning and end of the season or in the winter.

You will definately need:

  • Some sort of hat to protect you from the sun when flying and to keep it out of your eyes.  We do not allow baseball type caps because the brim is too long for good lookout, especially above.  Bucket or beannie hats are ideal.  You can buy one from the club office if you don’t already have one.  A woolly hat is good on colder days
  • Sunglasses even on dull days
  • A sweater and probably a lightweight jacket
  • Outdoor clothes in case it rains and warm clothes like ski wear in the winter
  • Sturdy shoes or boots and warm socks
  • Trousers if you don’t normally wear them
  • Sunscreen at any time of the year
  • Antihystemine tablets if you suffer from pollen allergies in the season

Can I get food and drinks on site?

We have professional caters who provide very high quality food and drinks for purchase in the club house.

  • The prices are more than competitive and the quality is better than most restaurants let alone other gliding clubs. The dining area is open from breakfast to late. Currenty it only takes cash so make sure you bring sufficient with you.
  • If you would like just a hot drink or a complete meal we can provide either
  • If you would like a meal before flying please allow enough time as all food is prepared when ordered

Are there any restrictions?

Not really except that our gliders have weight limitations.

  • Due to the balance limitations of our gliders there is a weight limit of 16 stones (102 kilos) and a height limit of 6’3″ (1.9m)
  • There is no upper age limit but you must be able to get into and out of the glider.
  • There is no minimum age to fly P2 in a glider but you must be old enough to understand instructions from the pilot in charge
  • If you are under 16 years old we will require a parental consent form to be signed.

If in any doubt please contact the office for advice.

Watch the briefing video

We require that everyone who takes an experience flight first watches the safety briefing video.

You can watch at the club or at home before you arrive.  To watch now click the arrow icon on the left.  Once open click the Full Screen icon at the bottom right then click go.

This gives information on important things such as how the airfield works, where the gliders take off and land, and how to use a parachute.

Your Pilot for the day will also explain some of these things to you before flight.
